I think 'triage' has been adopted by conservation biologists to make the point that the situation is critical, and bits of biodiversity will be lost if decisions are not made. It would be an interesting exercise to bring the concept of true triage to the public and see what they say - species can be measured and ranked in many ways, with costs.
