The dynamics around supervisors prescribing or circumscribing projects (often out of need) is a key topic for exploration in another post!Kai Chanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16799332629186682511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010015445969299314.post-51694984712163402862022-01-18T10:03:06.523-08:002022-01-18T10:03:06.523-08:00I only realized after leaving the relative privile...I only realized after leaving the relative privilege of IRES at UBC that most graduate students are substantially constrained within the parameters of grants that their adviser obtains to fund the students' graduate research. The self-reflection described here remains crucial for identifying a personally meaningful project, but there are more boundaries around selecting research questions for most students than this post implies. Depending on the student, these constraints can help projects progress more rapidly and/or can chafe!Sarah Klainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09601214821993201601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010015445969299314.post-71188066333110991002021-06-19T08:21:09.832-07:002021-06-19T08:21:09.832-07:00Thanks for the post. I am also very concerned with the "going back to normal" plan in Set. when 1) vaccines are not giving 100% immunity but a very good protection to not get sick/hospitalized/etc, 2) people can still transmit the virus even if vaccinated, 3) new variantes such as Delta are coming to us, and 4) we will all be in the best place for wide transmissions: enclosed spaces for hours w/ not-so-sure ventilation system that could (?) renew our shared air. There was a good section on The Current talking about Western University making vaccination mandatory (https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/the-current-for-may-31-2021-1.6046642/mandating-vaccines-at-universities-could-set-dangerous-precedent-says-bioethicist-1.6047417) and some people were more in favor of positive/alternative options than a negative reinforcement (no vaccine, no classes). It may also set a bad bioethical precedent with other medical conditions or situations in the future. More food for thought. rafaawahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14695019141755659488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010015445969299314.post-70647582092678803722021-06-11T18:10:31.457-07:002021-06-11T18:10:31.457-07:00Thanks, Kai.

O...I finally had a chance to read this great post.

One thing that I think is worth some discussion, is the connection between First Nations students not faring well in our program and the low levels of funding for most students. It's so important to scrutinize these cases with Indigenous students, in order to figure out what we could do better. I am not sure what kind of analysis will be possible post-hoc, but my experience as grad advisor, and just as a faculty member, includes several First Nations students, some who left and others who finished, some with massive help. Both were bright and capable students. In these experiences individual faculty members and the program as a whole went to sometimes extraordinary lengths (e.g., faculty providing funding for students out of their own grants even when not the student's supervisor or even on their committee), and the biggest problems are in those broader societal systems which you barely mention.

A couple of stories are broadly representative. One student took fourteen years to finish her PhD. She got to the end of her six years, restarted her program, and then needed two additional year-long extensions. A Master's student left after massive efforts all round, but to a good professional opportunity. It wasn't that the student couldn't finish—she needed a stable source of real income as came with her full-time job. In both cases, the students were routinely dealing with gun violence, arrests, suicides, abandonment, substance abuse, etc., in their immediate families. They were the 'rocks' in their families. The ones who picked up the pieces. So when these terrible events happened, is it any wonder their studies got put on hold? This happened again and again. Not just once a year, but several times a year.

I don't tell you this to excuse the program. Even though I saw individuals and the department as a whole go to extraordinary lengths, I think we can still do better. But I do think that we shouldn't kid ourselves that—working alone—we can easily overcome those broader societal policies and programs of institutionalized racism for many generations and still today. They have such powerful and collective effects, such awful legacies.

The success of anti-racism efforts connects with your point about the terrible funding levels that we provide the vast majority of our grad students, even on fellowship. Who can blame the students for taking on some other work that was necessary to help support their families (even though it slowed their thesis progress) and for the one student to leave her degree in favour of a full-time job when it came available? Thus the impoverishing conditions of grad school (for most) are directly linked to our department’s ability to serve our students from the most vulnerable and marginalized groups.Kai Chanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16799332629186682511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010015445969299314.post-46750277221095644852020-06-25T03:39:58.149-07:002020-06-25T03:39:58.149-07:00Hi Kai, we are working on improving the citation o...Hi Kai, we are working on improving the citation of IPBES products in compliance with the IPBES data management policy. Most academic talks depict a flawless cathedral of a research project, without going into how the first foundation may have crumbled or a supporting buttress collapsed midway through necessitating a complete re-design of the project. I read about this in the book Designing Social Inquiry, which I recommend to aspiring social scientists.
